This month’s newsletter takes a closer look at Self-Cleaning Hellan Strainer retrofits and how existing vessels can upgrade filtration systems without extensive piping or structural modifications. From using existing bilge and drainage systems to connecting with nearby overboard discharge points, we’re exploring practical ways to simplify installation, reduce maintenance demands, and improve filtration reliability. We’re also highlighting the specialized expertise behind our work, including a recent project involving a unique 16-inch, three-way rotary Leslie valve that put our team’s technical knowledge and problem-solving capabilities to work.

Simplifying Self-Cleaning Hellan Strainer Retrofits
Self-Cleaning Hellan Strainers can be integrated into existing shipboard piping with minimal disruption. Using existing drainage infrastructure reduces piping changes, structural work, installation cost, and maintenance demands.
Two practical discharge-routing options:
Option 1: Existing Bilge or Gravity Drain Collection Systems
Hard-pipe the cleaning discharge line to a nearby bilge, drain funnel, drainage tank connection, or deck drain. During cleaning, debris and flush water flow to the existing collection point, avoiding new hull penetrations or major structural modifications.
- Lower installation and shipyard labor costs
- Suitable across all deck levels and above or below the waterline
- Requires primarily added piping rather than equipment relocation
Option 2: Connection to Existing Nearby Overboard Discharge
When a nearby connection is available, hard-pipe the cleaning discharge line directly to an existing overboard discharge. This provides a dedicated route for debris and flush water without using inboard collection systems.
- Dedicated cleaning discharge route
- Reduced load on bilge and drain systems
- Best suited to accessible connections above the waterline
Designed for Existing Vessels
Both options limit piping modifications while providing continuous debris removal, improved filtration reliability, and reduced maintenance compared to traditional simplex/duplex strainers. In addition, fully autonomous models can initiate cleaning without operator input, while automated discharge ball valves can be timed to flush debris at operator-defined intervals.
