JA Moody June 2026 Broadcast

This month, we’re taking a closer look at the work behind smarter marine lighting and electrical solutions, and the partnerships helping drive that progress forward. From advanced photometric studies and lighting simulations to proven retrofit solutions built for long-term performance, the goal remains the same: helping customers improve safety, efficiency, and reliability before installation even begins.

Marine Lighting Simulations & Photometric Studies

A complimentary engineering service offered through JA Moody in partnership with Phoenix Lighting.

Before a single fixture is purchased or installed, your vessel’s lighting can be modeled, measured, and validated in software. A marine lighting simulation—also known as a photometric study—recreates a compartment or an entire ship inside a 3D calculation engine. For shipyards, engineers, and vessel owners, this prediction is the difference between a lighting package that passes inspection on the first attempt and one that requires expensive rework.

Why Model Your Lighting?

Whether you are designing a new build or modernizing an existing fleet, a photometric study removes the guesswork and protects your budget.

  • Optimize Fixture Counts: By modeling the exact delivered light, we identify the minimum number of fixtures required to meet specifications. You avoid overspending on materials and underspecifying for inspections.
  • Design Around Obstructions: HVAC trunking, piping, and conduits cast real shadows. A 3D model places fixtures around these obstructions so conflicts are resolved on screen, not on the deckplate.
  • De-Risk Retrofits & Upgrades: Replace obsolete legacy lighting (incandescent, fluorescent, sodium) with efficient LEDs. We can even model the reduced reflectivity of dirty, in-service engine rooms or validate new Anti-Terrorism / Force Protection (ATFP) perimeter requirements.
  • Guarantee Compliance: Validate your design against ABS, U.S. Navy, USCG, MSC, and MARAD illuminance schedules before procurement.

The Engineering Behind the Numbers

Not all lighting metrics are created equal. Our photometric studies cut through misleading marketing by focusing on what actually matters in a marine environment:

  • Delivered vs. Raw Lumens: We model effective delivered lumens based on high-quality optics, not the theoretical “raw” output of bare LED chips.
  • Light Loss Factor (LLF): We apply IES-standard multipliers to account for dirt accumulation and lumen degradation over time, ensuring your space stays compliant even in high-fouling machinery spaces.
  • Visual Proof: Instead of abstract cut sheets, you receive false-color illuminance maps showing exactly how bright every walkway and bulkhead will be.

Getting Started Is Simple (and Complimentary)

Because this engineering service is offered on a complimentary basis through JA Moody’s partnership with Phoenix Lighting, it can be brought into your project early without adding a separate engineering line item.

What we need from you:

  • 2D drawings, deck plans, or 3D STEP files.
  • No drawings? A dimensioned hand sketch and a few photos of the space are enough to get started.

2026 CAV Symposium

Dillon Yates attended the 2026 CAV Symposium in Philadelphia, PA from April 14-16,
2026, hosted by the Inventory Accuracy Office. It was an opportunity for the contracts
representative from Moody Marine Service to collaborate, train, and engage with other
vendors and NAVSUP across all areas of Inventory Accuracy as it pertains to the Navy
Supply System. Topics of discussion included Audit Readiness, Confirmations, W2W
Inventory, SIT/eRMS/NITA, ATAC, PDREP, and other CAV-related topics. The CAV
Symposium also covers new developments within the realm of NAVSUP and what
vendors need to know moving forward.
